Grapeshot In Action

Grapeshot has various customers who demand strict confidentiality to preserve their competitive edge, based on their use of Grapeshot. The last thing they want are their own competitors coming along to licence the same new techniques available through the Grapeshot iSA Toolkit.

We list just a couple of major examples of Grapeshot in use. Please contact us for more information.

IBM turns to Grapeshot

IBM inserted Grapeshot as a layer within WebSphere for it’s new Audience Portal – focused on global publishing and media markets.

The problem to solve was that many portal owners like the FT and BBC reported that they serve the same pages to all their users. Every user gets the same experience and the portal is not effective at learning about each consumer user.

IBM signed a Teaming Agreement with Grapeshot in April 2006 to work on embedding Grapeshot more formally as the personalisation layer within the IBM Websphere product range - a new system called "Audience Portal" for media owners and online publishers.

A major internet network company headquartered in the USA with over $1.5 billion revenue was seeking new technology that could suggest related words to a user's enquiry. The problem was that a thesaurus system could link words together, but only in a rigid and pre-defined way.

Grapeshot was used to index live news information and provide a probabilistic suggestion of words that could adequately link "wi-fi" to "broadband" without the aid of any thesaurus system. This saved upfront costs of rule-building and also ongoing thesaurus maintenance costs. What's more, Grapeshot could use the dynamic news to keep abreast of changing word associations: for example "Katrina" linked to "hurricane".

This US customer took delivery of the Grapeshot SDK in December 2005, and by February 2006 had built production code. After formal testing and QA procedures (a formal requirement of this bell weather US quoted company) this customer went live with Grapeshot code in May 2006 - completing a full production cycle in less than six months.

Reuters innovates with Grapeshot

Reuters works hard to bring the right information to people first.

With the growth of the internet, blogging and material published beyond Reuters own network of correspondents, Reuters Innovation has developed a concept for a new information tool. Instead of a search box, Reuters Innovation wanted to present today's news as Heatmaps, as topics of interest, tuned to individual tastes as part of a new personalised Insight product.

The Reuters Innovation team turned to Grapeshot to provide a "more than keyword search" experience for a new set of business users - managers of small businesses that need international news and alerts about the countries and market sectors they trade in.

Reuters Insight is the new product, currently under development, sponsored by the Reuters board and being rolled out to a set of Beta users through 2007.

Grapeshot has provided a backbone web service for finding relevant stories from Reuters and other news networks, aggregated according to individual profiles and displayed as Heatmaps and topic maps for easy reading.
