Dr. Martin Porter
Dr. Martin Porter

Dr Martin Porter has devoted much of his working life (1980-2006) to the implementation of Information Retrieval (IR) systems, in particular, IR systems based on the probabilistic model.

Martin Porter is well known for his Porter Stemmer algorithm, used by almost all search engine vendors today (including IBM, Microsoft and Google).

Martin is a winner of the Strix Award, "for outstanding contribution to the field of information retrieval".

John Snyder
John Snyder

John Snyder teamed up with Martin Porter in 1992 and started Muscat, the natural language search software company which commercialised "concept-based" searching prior to the advent of other more recent Bayesian-based search vendors.

John built up a strong international customer base before negotiating the sale of Muscat in 1997 to The Dialog Corporation, the large aggregator of online business information, for $15 million.

John has been an active member of the Cambridge high-technology community, chairing the 5th Cambridge Enterprise Conference, and co-founding the venture research company Library House. He is a Board Member of EEDA (East of England Development Agency) and also "Entrepreneur In Residence" at Cambridge University.
